★ AUSTRIAN PATIENT SAFETY AWARD 2025

LEAN · HRO · SIMULATION

An effective primary care unit needs a planned start.

Opening an Austrian primary care unit (Primärversorgungseinheit, PVE) involves new processes, interfaces and team roles. If these are unclear, waiting times, inefficiencies and pressure on staff can follow. Simulation helps make weaknesses visible so your team can work through them before opening.

WHAT THE PACKAGE AIMS TO ACHIEVE

A safe primary care unit needs more than routine. It needs structure.

AWARD-WINNING

Austrian Patient Safety Award 2025 — primary care category.

In 2025, our workshop concept received the Austrian Patient Safety Award in the primary care category for the project “Lean-supported commissioning with a high reliability organisation approach for primary care units — safety through structure” (English translation of the German project title).

Submitted jointly with PVE Diakonissen GmbH. Presented by Plattform Patient:innensicherheit, Austria’s patient safety platform.

OUR METHODOLOGY

Three pillars for a well-prepared primary care unit

A primary care unit brings together several professions, new roles, shared premises and interconnected processes. A structured approach helps the team prepare for this organisational complexity before services begin.

Our approach combines three established methods:

Lean Healthcare organises processes, reduces waste and makes value visible. High reliability organisations (HRO) apply principles used in high-risk sectors such as aviation and nuclear power: attention to weak signals, clear escalation routes and systematic learning. Simulation tests the proposed processes under realistic conditions before the first patient arrives.

The Austrian Patient Safety Award 2025 recognised the project developed with PVE Diakonissen GmbH. The award acknowledges this practical implementation; it is not a guarantee of outcomes for every new primary care unit.

You receive a documented approach developed in practice, with processes and simulation exercises adapted to your primary care unit.

HOW IT WORKS

From process design to working routines.

01

Process development

Develop clear, practical processes using Lean methods.

02

Teamwork & processes

Human factors, roles and collaboration within the team.

03

ERC Immediate Life Support

Optional resuscitation training in line with ERC standards.

04

Simulation & implementation

Test the proposed processes using simulators and standardised patients.

05

Completion

Clear checklists, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and process descriptions for everyday work.

What your organisation takes away.

  • Clear working processes Designed to support your primary care unit from day one.
  • Core processes Tested and assessed for readiness under realistic conditions.
  • Essential SOPs & flowcharts For running your primary care unit.
  • Process testing Using simulation.
WHO IT IS FOR

Primary care units we support

We support primary care units at different stages, from planning and commissioning to improving processes in an established service.

New primary care units preparing to open
Recently opened units establishing their routines
Existing practices moving to a primary care unit structure
Units constituted as a GmbH, association or cooperative (Austria)
Established units with processes that need improvement
Units adding new professional groups
Primary care networks across multiple sites
Primary care units being developed by an association or provider organisation
Tailored to your needs on request
Why Med-STA

Experience, certification and recognition that matter

Training teams since 2005

Over 25,000 participants trained in real workplaces rather than classrooms.

ERC course centre & continuing education approval

An official ERC course centre, with Austrian DFP and ÖGKV PFP approval and documented continuing education.

Recognised in 2025

Austrian Patient Safety Award 2025 and HRO-Award 2025: independent recognition of quality.

An award-winning primary care concept

Our Lean-supported commissioning approach received the Austrian Patient Safety Award 2025 in the primary care category. We adapt this recognised concept to your unit’s requirements.
